What is Health Tourism

Health refers not only to the absence of disease and disability in the individual's body, but also to the complete physical, mental and social well-being of the individual.

Tourism; It is a trip to another country for purposes such as resting, having fun, seeing and getting to know. At the same time, tourism is all of the economic, cultural, technical measures and studies taken to attract tourists to a country or a region. Touristic trip is not only people going from one place to another but also being in cultural, economic and social communication.

If we explain health tourism after these scientific definitions; health tourism is the individual's desire to leave the borders of his/her own country and seek treatment in another country in order to regain his/her health. Health tourism is a rapidly rising trend in the world and in our country in recent years and is a very important alternative tourism type. However, the difference of health tourism from other types of tourism is that no effort has been made to create a new form of tourism. It has emerged completely spontaneously. When it was seen that patients who preferred Turkey for treatment left foreign currency, the concept of customer started to be used instead of patient, and the concept of health tourism emerged.

Any service that brings foreign currency to the country falls within the scope of exports. However, this route works differently in health tourism. In the export logic, a good or service leaves the borders of the country and is offered to the market in another country. However, in health tourism, on the contrary, the foreign exchange starts with entering the borders of the country from abroad.

The concept of marketing in health tourism also works in the opposite direction. When it comes to marketing, all kinds of marketing elements and activities are used to sell a product or good. However, it is not possible to apply this to health tourism. While a hospital makes a profit by prescribing more drugs, the person in the treatment process is negatively affected by this. The profit of one party costs the health of the other party. This leads to a wrong treatment method, an unhappy health tourist and a country with a bad impression.
